Newsletter September 2020

Hi,

we hope you’re keeping well.

Thank you to all volunteers who attended our events during National Volunteering Week 2020. It’s been amazing to see you there, even virtually! and we look forward to seeing you again in future virtual events.

National Volunteering Week gave us the chance to say thank you to all past and present volunteers and their volunteer coordinators. Please check here a Thank you video from the staff and volunteers of Fingal Volunteer Centre:

Thank you video!

Our colleagues in Dun Laoghaire Rathdown Volunteer Centre have organised a Meet the organisation free event with Le Cheile, an organisation that provides a mentoring service to young people involved with Young Person’s Probation.

Le Cheile is recruiting for volunteers to join them as Youth Mentors and Parent mentors (see below) and this event might be a great occasion for you to interact directly with Maxine, the volunteer coordinator, and express your interest.

To register for the free event, please click here:

The Volunteer Ireland Awards are the major annual initiative to celebrate volunteers in Ireland. The awards shine a light on the remarkable achievements of volunteers around the country by honoring them at a national level.

The awards begin with a public call for nominations. Nominations for the 2020 awards are now open and will close on the 1st of October. Anyone can nominate a volunteer, someone they know who gives their time and energy voluntarily and without pay.

If you’d like to nominate a volunteer or a volunteer coordinator please check this link: https://bit.ly/30cYosw

Deadline is the 9th of October!

New roles are added to our database on a regular basis and you may also view them yourself on I-VOL before you receive our next newsletter.

We are working from home so to cover all applications and registrations. Our monthly Outreach programme in local libraries has been postponed until further notice.

Your safety and limiting the spread of the Coronavirus being the main priority, we continue to encourage you to adhere to HSE instructions on how best to avoid COVID-19, both in the work environment and at home.

Please bear in mind that we’re constantly working with not profit and charity organisations and there will be more roles on I-VOL in the coming weeks.

In response to reports of increasing incidents of Domestic Violence during the restrictions, Fingal Volunteer Centre has teamed up with Saint Patrick’s Cathedral, Safe Ireland and other volunteer centres around Ireland to create CRiTiCALL – an initiative to support people emerging from domestic violence during the Covid-19 pandemic.

CRiTiCALL aims to provide support to help people in their journey to safety by offering practical resources along with comfort and encouragement from within the community including:

– Donations – purchasing much-needed items and dropping them off in Dublin 8 (Click here to apply);

– Volunteer your home – volunteer a holiday home or second property as a safe haven (Click here to apply);
– Letters of courage- sending letters and hope to those emerging from domestic abuse (Click here to apply).

We’ve partnered up with several nursing homes, both in county Dublin and county Fingal, for our Fingal Letter Campaign.

The idea is to recruit as many volunteeers as possible willing to post letters, drawings, poems or whatever you can think of, to the residents of the nursing homes.

Would you like to take part in this project?

You might even decide to involve your small ones and ask them to be creative and prepare a drawing or something!

TEA AT 3!

Continuing with Tea-At-3; a national weekly event that invites you to (appropriately!) check-in with your neighbours at 3 pm every Saturday.

Tea-At-3 is a physically distant activity that takes place from your doorstep, in separate gardens, over the phone or across a video call!

“The Tea-At-Three idea was originally created by Helen O’Hara and her neighbours in Rathbawn Drive, Castlebar, Co Mayo! We now want to bring it to communities across the nation”
