Spread the Joy All Year Round: Join Our Birthday Card-Making Initiative

Last year, Fingal Volunteer Centre launched the Christmas and New Year Cards Initiative to reach out to people living in isolation. Volunteers from across Fingal created beautiful handmade cards, which were collected and distributed through local organisations supporting these individuals. The response was overwhelming. The feedback we received from those who received a card, and from the organisations who delivered them, showed us just how much a simple, handmade gesture can mean. For people living in isolation or in nursing homes, a card is more than paper and ink; it’s a reminder that someone, somewhere, is thinking of them.

That impact is why we couldn’t stop there. We are delighted to announce the launch of our Birthday Card-Making Initiative, so that same feeling of being remembered isn’t just for Christmas, it’s there throughout the year, on the one day that’s just for them.

We are inviting individual volunteers, families, schools, corporate offices, and community groups to join us in creating handmade birthday cards for people in nursing homes and vulnerable groups across Fingal. Together, we can make sure that every birthday, no matter someone’s circumstances, is met with a little joy and a reminder that they’re valued and connected to their community.

💌 How You Can Get Involved

We welcome everyone to join, whether as an individual, a school class, a community group, or a workplace team! Here’s how:

Create Your Cards

  • Create handmade birthday cards whenever it suits you (draw, paint, decorate, or craft! Take inspiration from the internet.)
  • Include a kind note such as “Wishing you a wonderful birthday” or “Thinking of you on your special day.”
  • Do not address the card to anyone in particular, as we won’t know in advance who will receive it.
  • Please sign the card with your first name only. For example – From Emma.
  • If you have an envelope, please leave it open. Do not seal the envelope.3

Drop Them Off at Your Local Library or Send Them In

Once your cards are ready, you can drop them off during a Volunteer Centre Pop-Up at a Fingal Library (check the schedule of pop-ups across Fingal: volunteerfingal.ie/volunteer-pop-up).

Or alternatively, you may post the cards directly to us:

Fingal Volunteer Centre QES House (Unit 8C), Birch House, Rosemount Business Park, Dublin 11, D11 A9F

Spread the Word

Encourage others to join! The more cards we receive, the more birthdays we can brighten throughout the year.

If you are an organisation working with isolated people or nursing home residents and would love to receive these volunteer-made cards, get in touch with us at: volunteers@volunteerfingal.ie
